"There's no story if there isn't some conflict. The memorable things are usually not how pulled together every body is. I think everybody feels lonely and trapped sometimes. I would think its more or less the norm" - Wes Anderson
Statement of Intent
For my portfolio, I am intending to produce a variety of work by illustrating my ideas and imagination by developing a piece of work based on my chosen theme Conflict. By the end of this topic, I hope to have completed a wide range of ideas for my project. Conflict comes under many different ideas. We are currently living in a world where conflic is everywhere. Examples would be the wars which go on in the world to even little arguments between people. However for my course work, I am going to focus on the idea of women being less inferior to men.
To give myself some inspiration, I will research different photographers to gather some information that will boost my grade up. My chosen photographer is someone who looked closely into the war aspects. I have specifically chosen Nicole Tung as her images are built around the theme of Conflict. Her work is most commonly located in the Middle East and in my opinion that is part of the world where most suffering and hardship is situated. Her images manifest the pain which the less fortunate go through and I wish to stimulate them ideas to my pieces of work.
When I chose to do Conflict, My initial thoughts were building up work based around the topic of Racism. Whilst I was researching photographers and images based on this theme, I saw domestic violence. Domestic violence can be caused by racism which allowed me to put together a scheme of work ideas together by collaborating. It links well with conflict as its a continuos problem which has been occuring for centuries. The stereotypical view that women must obey their husbands or partners and allow the abuse they recieve.
To show progression through my work I plan to develop my ideas by creating a plan on what I choose to do. First I would demonstrate with different locations to emphasize my chosen topic as the background of a picture really highlights the images story. Backgrounds like a bricked wall, a blank white background to show the emptiness. This is so my model is clearly focused upon.
For my chosen project, I wish to experiment using a variety of techniques on my camera to show I have an understanding from previous knowledge me and my class mates have learnt at the start of our course. I will also include the use of photo shop to show off my skills when I have achieved the photographs I have completed successfully. I hope to you a tripod to capture pictures which at least 2/3 will be landscape to give an even look. When I create posters I determine to build them up to be as imaginative as I can but still represent a professional piece. I want to be able to use a lot of tools on photo shop to express my ideas.
My main objective is to be able to accomplish a full descriptive piece of research and outcomes which can show my evidence, on planning my desired topic. Which will then be directly published for me to come back to in case of help. As I progress on, my portfolio will show a step by step process of how I have been able to obtain a well regulated piece of course work.
At the end of each persons a work, you would be given a strength and advice on how to improve. I aspire to use them "Even better if's" to establish my work into making it to a higher grade level work. To conclude this as a whole I will write an in depth evaluation to sum up all to which I have managed to grasp in this project. In this I will write about my opinions on what I loved most and what I think did not go so well. I think reflecting on everything you have learnt helps to boost the knowledge you have gained over the time.

The photographer is using the rule of thirds to display the image. It's chosen to be 2/3 of the landscape (the ground) and 1/3 is captured of the sky. The sky makes the people and the surroundings stand out. The photographer has shown the ground more to show what the conditions of what people live in. This makes the audience feel sympathetic. This image shows a family that look like refugees from there facial expressions and the luggage they are carrying. There facial expressions show they are going through difficulty.

Composition
In the image it seems to be that the photographer has used a fast shutter speed to capture the movement of the people at around 1/4000th. You can tell this by their body language as it's not straight but is at a diagonal angle starting from the top left hand corner to the bottom right hand corner in a line.
A deep depth of field has been used as everything is in focus. This is to capture each perspective of the image to the audience. It shows the long distance the family have traveled.
The white balance which is used is direct sunlight at 5200k. It shows a dreary mood. The colours in this picture are dull. Colours in this like brown, khaki green. Mostly dark colours with a few colours standing out like the blue sky and red.
The people shown in the image is at eye level. The focus point is the people as they are the most zoomed in to. 2/3 of the image is of the ground to show the environment and 1/3 is of the sky.
There is a strong leading line from the top left hand corner to the middle of the right side. It's a diagonal line where the heads of the people are. The picture is made to be eye level for the audience.

In my opinion this image is really heart hitting. What I like about the image is it that it expresses all sorts of emotions in this image and it gives a direct feeling from the fact that the people is the focus point in the image. It makes us feel sympathetic as even though we may not see what different parts of the world may be going through we must be aware. To help we could send our love and give charity. |
Connection
It seems to be the people are living in poverty as the environment doesn't look healthy. There is damp looking mood everywhere and the house in the background look old and battered. It seems to be abandoned as it looks to be the only building there. It links to conflict as I think the image is about refugees as the people in the image are carrying enough luggage as they can as well as holding a baby in its carriage. There facial expressions display them being worried and struggling as they could be fleeing from home. The message is to deliver the problems that there are in this world, even if it may not be happening in front of us but we must be aware. This impacts the worlds emotions towards this. |

In this photo the photographer has used a women to express domestic abuse. This really stands out as statistically domestic abuse affects 1 in 4 women during their life time. The models facial expression is straight to show the result of what horror people go through. The model has bruises on her face and blood dripping down. Blood represents pain, agony and distress. This makes me feel sympathetic towards this women as she has her finger on her mouth showing she cant tell anyone what the story is about.

The photographer has used a medium depth of field. The camera is mostly focused on the women face and finger whilst her hair is slightly in focus. The background is black and the connotations of it is sadness, loneliness and darkness. The colours which are seen in this are dull colours such as black and white. The person in this picture is looking directly at you this could involves the witness-er of this photo to imagine the sorrow. You would be able to tell a story. Its quite central pointed and zoomed into the face. The picture overall is center and symmetrical.

Context
"All states made "wife beating" illegal by 1920. However, only since the 1970s has the criminal justice system begun to treat domestic violence as a serious crime, not as a private family matter. Domestic violence is any physical, sexual, or psychological abuse that people use against a former or current intimate partner. It refers to a number of criminal behaviors: assault and battery; sexual assault; stalking; harassment; violation of a civil restraining order; homicide; and other offenses that occur in the course of a domestic violence incident, such as arson, robbery, malicious destruction of property, and endangering a minor. No person can validly consent to a breach of the peace or a battery that may result in serious injury or death" (researched) |

This picture is really effective in expressing domestic abuse. What I really like about it is that my eyes are first drawn to the finger on her lip. The women has her finger on her lips which shows her silent screams. How much she wants to tell what is going on but it is muted as she will be tortured even more. Crystal grey eyes shows innocence and in this image her eyes have water in them considering it looks like she had gone through a lot of tolerance but needed to break out. The blue eyes had washed away from tears. |
Connection
It seems to be that the photographer could have been through domestic violence as to why this model she has chosen to be in her picture is really heart touching. She wanted to express what women go through when they shouldn't. This links to conflict as it's about women against men. How in some cases , arguments can be bias. The facial expression of the women is quite straight faced with a little bit of tension. If you look closely at her eyes they aren't looking exactly towards you but a little more up. this could be to show she is some how intimidated by something which has forced to leave her in this state. |
Plan for photo shoot
These images are related are to my theme on Conflict. The theme I have chosen is self harm and domestic violence. I chose this topic as I have seen domestic violence and self harm happen around me and its a serious issue which should not happen at all. I think the idea of having notes with words on them expresses the problem more.
First Shoot
For my first shoot, We based it in the backyard of school. To be honest what went well was I used different camera techniques to present my idea of domestic abuse but in terms on racial abuse. I did the idea upon Muslim women as in my opinion they are the most attacked as they want to express their religion however some parties disagree with them.

I think these are my best images as i changed focus of the camera towards my model on her hand which had the writing of "Plz help me" and then on her face. I think its effective as it shows more of an understanding of what she wants us as the witness er to be involved.
|
I think these pictures could be improved. I used a higher aperture which let too much light in so it bleached the photo. The first image was blurred which changed the thought of the photo. I doesn't look quite serious.
|
Second Shoot
For my second shoot we based the topic on bullying and the effect it has on children. We made it look like its about children by my model wearing a hoodie. I used different camera techniques for example I experimented by changing the white balance setting on the camera.

Worst picture |
In my opinion this is a good image as the white balance i chose was cloudy and it created a gloomy atmosphere and that really emphasized on the characters feelings as my person is acting as a victim of bullying.
|
To be honest I chose this to be the picture that doesn't seem to fit in as the picture doesn't show a story of a girl being bullied. The location is a bit messy. The model in my picture is blurred in this picture.
|
Third Shoot
For my third photo shoot, I decided to use other people as my models and create a set of images based on bullying. To do this we based it on in a classroom as it gives an effect because most bullying happens in school and children want to report it but they feel like they are being held back.

In my opinion I think this is the best image out of the rest as the white balance I changed it to was Tungsten which set the gloomy mood. It is focused on my first models arm going in for the punch. This shows more significance.
|
According to me, i think this image is the worst as it shows no meaning. Its blurred and there is no specific point to focus upon.

Evaluation
For our course work our chosen project theme is based on Conflict. In my opinion it’s a very encyclopedic topic. It is really interesting to learn new things internationally of the problems all around the world such as bullying, racism. For photography it has been fun.
The concept I mainly focused on was domestic violence. As its a growing problem in the poor areas of this world.
During our research, we had learnt and used a variety of new techniques. Experimenting with different props to create photographs based on my chosen subject was really fun. It allowed me to put my imagination into one whole. We had learnt how to use photo shop and the ways we could improve our images. For example, I had no idea how to get rid of a white background on a selected image to add onto my poster. So when I learnt how to do it I was really surprised!
To edit my photos I had come across photo shop and played around with the tools. According to me, a technique that I wish to develop more further is contrasting colours on photo shop. I reckon that adding a layer of a chosen fade will complement my images, boosting my grade more higher.
Over the time building up my project, I wanted to inspire myself by looking at other photographers photos to have a positive impact upon mine. I looked closer at photographers who's images were based around war on women. I had taken in account of a photographer called Nicole Tung.
She influenced me to think about different backgrounds and cultures to portray on my work.
At the start of our photography lessons we learnt how to use different camera techniques such as how to change the white balance, Rule of Thirds e.t.c. To be honest, the technique which I enjoyed the most was capturing movements using a slow and fast shutter speeds. It was entertaining as my friends would do all sorts of movements to be able to achieve my objective.
I feel that the most successful part of my project was editing my photos to develop posters. I think I managed to create a professional variety of posters to complete my topic on Domestic Violence.
When attempting to change the aperture between high and low, sometimes when snap-shotting my area it wouldn't be accurate. So to aid this I asked my teacher to help me. The result of asking for help worked and I was able to do my pictures.
I would ask other people to help model for my images. As then I am sure I can do more constructed photos to attain my end of year target.
